National summit brings together top sport leaders

Monday, 30 January, 2012

From February 1-2, the Canadian Sport for Life National Summit in Ottawa-Gatineau will bring together more than 500 delegates in sport, recreation, education, health and government from across Canada.

The Hilton Lac-Leamy Hotel in Gatineau will provide the venue for two days of expert presentations and seminars on the progress of the Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) movement and the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model that it promotes.

“Canadian Sport for Life is a movement to improve the quality of sport in Canada,” says Richard Way, project lead for CS4L. “It has grown out of the recognition that our athlete development in all of our sports has not always been as effective as it could be, and we can do better.

“By addressing some of the shortcomings in things like developing physical literacy, competition framing, design, and general cooperation between groups in sport, recreation, education and health, we can produce top athletes while improving the health of the nation as a whole.”

CS4L has three main goals: developing physical literacy in Canadian children, producing sustained excellence in elite athlete development, and fostering a nation where people remain active for life in sport and physical activity throughout their lives.

Day 1 of the Summit will feature seven leaders in Canadian sport and physical activity presenting their “Big Idea” on how to change sport in Canada for the better in TED.com style presentations; as well as The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State for (Sport) addressing the delegates.

During Day 2 CS4L will launch the Messenger Program, which support CS4L Champions deliver the ‘quality sport’ message in communities across Canada.

On Friday, February 3rd over 110 global leaders from five continents will share innovative programming at the first ever World LTAD Symposium, also held at the Hilton Lac-Leamy.
